We started reading some Amelia Bedelia books this month in our ESP

Book Club.  While reading Amelia Bedelia's First Day of School  we came

accross "Sloppy Joes".

My studentsdidn't know any more than Amelia Bedelia about

Sloppy Joes... I decided that our special treat of the month would be to

make sloppy joes.

]]> First we made a grocery store run.

We needed ground beef, onions, green peppers, yellow mustard,

ketchup, tomato puree, salt and pepper and brown sugar.

(Luckily I had some brown sugar I bought on my last trip home!)

We also bought some veggies for a salad to go with our Sloppy Joes.

Back at school we started preparing our lunch.

The boys got the salad ready

as the girls chopped up the onions and green peppers.

A few tears later and we were ready to start.

Next we added the meat, ketchup, tomato puree, mustard
and brown sugar.

Mixed it all up and set it to simmer....

Yummy !
(We looked for hamburger buns but
we had to make do with hotdog buns!)

Wish we had these for school lunch!!

This was our first week of the new school year.  We had a very smooth week!! Of course we had a few tears as the new (and returning students) parents left their children at preschool for the first time (or after the break).  Don't worry Mommies YOU will get used to it little by little!  Yes, it is true, it is harder for the mommies to get used to their "babies" growing up then the “babies" to get used to school!  In the early years classes the students are learning “Pat-a-cake”and their first initials, as well as practicing how to change their shoes, wash their hands, use the restroom, brush their teeth, change into their park clothes, eat lunch and tidy up etc all by themselves.  It is a hard task and one that takes time, understanding and LOTS of practice!!  SO if your child's clothes come home not folded exactly right and their shoes on the wrong feet congratulate them on doing their best!! That is all we can ask of them.  As the year progresses they will get better and better at these tasks and you may find yourself yet again a little teary eyed as you realize your baby is growing up!

I often get asked what the difference is between students who study at our preschool and at our "eikaiwa".  There is a big difference in HOW they study.  Our preschool program is run in English.  The students who graduate this program speak English and THINK in English.  As of our students get older we teach them how to use a dictionary.  The difference between Preschool graduates and "eikaiwa" students is very obvious when they take out their dictionaries.

Looks like a regular dictionary until you open it....

The closets are the big deep futon size kind!  We joked that Miss Kelly could sleep there in the "loft".  Miss Kelly and I exchanged glances and yes she was liking it too!! We found it -- her new home away from home!  Then I told Mr. Yasu and the real-estate agent "This is it! She doesn't need to see anymore!"  This time the guys exchanged glances "Really? You guys like it??"  They said.  "It's so… Showa ..."    Well I don't know if it is a girl thing or a foreigner thing but I had to ask..."Did you like the other box type better??"  The real-estate agent said “I am sure if all the other things were equal even if the other place was a little smaller 9 out of 10 customers would pick the boxy type.  I looked around what is not to like?  The ceilings were a little low but no basketball players would be living here.  The air conditioner would surely need replacing soon....but other than that the place screamed H-O-M-E.  Who wants a box when you can have a home?  What do you think?  The apartment is super clean.  The kitchenette was just replaced and all of the wallpaper was just redone too...  Is "Showa style" a bad thing??
